“Games” always be blamed as a cause of anger and frustration in children. My last statement was about the relationship between violent video game and aggressive behaviour. Indeed, Aggression and frustration have been formed in the human cause of many stress factors games are not a problem. Game is an online entertainment which becomes so popular among adult and young adult. Normal player to esports players playing video games — even violent games — to enjoy playing with their friends or release stress. So, I was fascinating with game culture and focus on relieving the frustration emotion.

But in fact game online, It also can trigger a lot of emotions which have the potential to cause frustration. Every community is toxic. This problem has deteriorated the game community as same as social media. Players use the offered real-time communication which is talking and chatting in improper ways by using a lot of aggressive verbal traits to others player. Verbal aggression was consistently associated with cyberbullying perpetration from trash-talking to harassment. Many players may be at risk for stress or aggressive reaction outcomes.

The belief of venting anger has become widespread in our culture. In movies, magazine articles, and even on billboards, people are encouraged to vent their anger. As I read many articles related to catharsis theory “The process of reducing or eliminating a complex by recalling it to conscious awareness and allowing it to be expressed.” — by Sigmund Freud founder of psychoanalysis. Emotional release is linked to a need to relieve unconscious conflicts that causing frustration. The point of frustration in this project means the act of being stopped or hindered in the goal-attainment for a player which will lead towards a stimulus to overcome the obstacle rather than becoming angry. In catharsis theory, I summarise that there are three main methods to reduce the frustration which are venting, calming, and ignoring or distracting.

In my visual experiment using method based on catharsis theory inspired by toxic issues in the game culture by focusing on venting frustration from abusive words.

The first experiment, I create a 3D game about beating obstacles which are the abusive words and aggressive verbal traits. The second experiment, I create a 2D game simulation about the process of reducing and eliminating the abusive words.

I have been using the observation method to interview and survey on a sample group of Thai young adult gamer and non-gamer. As a result, the study found that venting “abusive words” and “aggressive verbal traits” in games effect on reducing frustration in the short term, but this reduction may act as a consequence, reinforcing the behaviour and promoting future aggression.

In my expectation is to create a game within virtual reality(VR) that can help the player to relieve frustration feeling and remain to relax, calm, focus and concentrate. In my goal, for a player which will lead towards a stimulus to overcome the obstacle rather than becoming angry.
